About The Manotick Directory

In 1996, "The Manotick Index" was first published on the Web by local resident Pat Drummond (proprietor of PDQ Web Design). It was a very small directory with links to all the local Web sites then in existence - very few!

In 2000, the Manotick & Area Business Womens' Network (Sharon Boothroyd, Jo-Ann Mangione, Leah Kirkpatrick, etc.) became interested in spearheading a project for local businesses, and encouraged Pat to purchase a domain and expand the business directory in the growing community portal. The domain name "manotick.net" was registered for the renamed "The Manotick Directory".

After the MWBN bowed out of the project, Pat decided to try to keep the new community directory going. To stay in business, all advertising services would be charged nominal fees. Since most local businesses are small, the fees were kept extemely low. The site was expanded into a comprehensive guide and source of informaiton for the entire area. Pat considered the directory mostly volunteer work for the community since it doesn't even pay her the equivalent of minimum wage. In spite of this she provided free Web pages for many local community groups and kept fees low so even the smallest business could afford to promote their services and products online.

The real "value" for business is the very high ratings of "The Manotick Directory" in search engines. Pat uses her knowledge of Web marketing to make the entire site search-friendly, and promotes it regularely with popular Web search services like Google and Yahoo. Most people use search engines to find business products and services (85% in 2000). When people search for any phrases containing 'Manotick', they see pages in "The Manotick Directory" at the top of the list. Remember, on the Web, no one knows if you are large or small!
