OTTAWA — The Elizabeth Le Geyt Award for good works in environmental conservation has been given this year to Linda Ryan and her husband, Andy Durocher.

Ms. Ryan has been teaching an introductory birding course, Come Fly With Me, for the past 15 years through the adult education program for the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board. She also conducts complimentary field trips for her new birding enthusiasts.

Mr. Durocher has maintained and repaired the bird boxes on the Carleton Golf and Yacht {Club} Course and at the Baxter reserve in Kars Village for the past 15 years. Last winter, he was nursemaid to a yellow-rumped warbler that had decided to overwinter in his cedar hedge, feeding it tiny slivers of suet every morning. In the spring, the bird was able to welcome its returning relatives.

The presentation of the award was given by Deborah Hass, executive administrator at the Wild Bird Care Centre, at a luncheon hosted by Citizen Birds columnist Elizabeth Le Geyt. The award was originally created by Kathy Nihei, the founder and administrator of the Wild Bird Care Centre until her death in Jan/09.

Former Citizen photographer, Lynn Ball, also an avid birder, was in attendance and was the event's photographer.
